ENLIGHT 2019 premiered in the beautiful city of Edinburgh from May 1st through the 3rd. The sold-out venue at the Royal College of Physicians in the heart of the historic Old City was the sight where participants from around the world gathered for three days of intensive, all-day workshops from some of the leading experts in schema therapy.

We are happy to share three recordings that highlight some of the experiences participants enjoyed at the biennial symposium, starting with the Welcome Address this week, followed next week with the Featured Presentation, and finally the Plenary Panel.

    WELCOME ADDRESS

Three days of intense training in schema therapy were kicked off with a Welcome Address, presented by Susan Simpson, the ISST Executive Board Secretary.

Active ISST Members enrolled on the website can view Susan's address by tapping below. Watch as she shares highlights about Edinburgh, including fun tidbits about how the Scottish might question your intelligence, talk about the weather, or invite you to join in a sing along.

Special Issues in Schema Therapy for Chronic Depression

Ruth focused on how to treat chronic depression and dysthymia with schema therapy, using Renner's model outlined in the article by Renner, Arntz, Leeuw and Huibers in Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice in 2013, titled, "Treatment for chronic depression using schema therapy."

Ruth discussed the role of specific schemas in blocking progress. She also described  behavioral pattern-breaking approaches for addressing the "depressongenic interpersonal style" typical in patients with chronic depression. Ruth also presented practical strategies to help clinicians remain in the "healthy adult therapist mode" when working with this challenging population.

    About the Presenter

Ruth Holt is a Clinical Psychologist and is the Principal of Canberra Clinical and Forensic Psychology. She has advanced certification by ISST in both Individual and Couples Schema Therapy. Ruth delivers certification training, presenting on couples, domestic and family violence, and women's mental health issues. She has gained some of her most valuable therapeutic tools working with very challenging patients in schema therapy, and she will be sharing some of the lessons she has learned during the webinar.

CONTEXTUAL SCHEMA THERAPY: BUILDING THE HEALTHY ADULT MODE IN SCHEMA THERAPY

The development of a healthy adult mode is the backbone of any successful schema therapy treatment. Despite this key role, a detailed description of how the healthy adult mode can be explicitly enhanced has been lacking in the schema therapy literature.

This webinar presents an approach to developing and strengthening the healthy adult mode, based on the recent book Contextual Schema Therapy: An Integrative Approach to Personality Disorders, Emotion Dysregulation and Interpersonal Functioning by Eckhard Roediger, Bruce Stevens and Robert Brockman (Context Press, 2018).

The book focuses on schema modes to improve interpersonal relationships, and includes exercises from acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and functional analytic psychotherapy (FAP). Robert's major contribution as a co-author included integrating the 3rd wave techniques of mindfulness, self-compassion and values to directly strengthen the healthy adult mode.

    About the Presenter

Robert Brockman is accredited by ISST as a schema therapist, supervisor and trainer. He regularly facilitates training events for Schema Therapy Training of Australia, providing trainings in several countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Hong Kong.

Robert currently holds a research fellowship with Australian Catholic University (ACU) where he researches psychological approaches to well-being and schema therapy processes, including the relevance of schema therapy to chronic rumination and worry, HIV sufferers, problems gamblers, forensic patients, psychosis and eating disorders.

Robert was honored as the winner of the INSPIRE 2016 Young Investigator Award, presented in Vienna, Austria. The award highlighted his research applying schema therapy for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and the pathological worry processes.

Robert runs Schema Therapy Sydney, a private practice located in Sydney dedicated to schema therapy and related experiential therapy approaches. He practices out of his Liverpool clinic.

Andrew Phipps, a clinical psychologist from Sydney, will be facilitating the webinar.

    Members of the ISST:

Some of you are probably aware that the requirements for certification as a Schema Therapy Supervisor and Trainer have changed.  This email is meant to restate & clarify these changes. (This information is also posted on the ISST website.)

Previously, an Advanced Schema Therapist could immediately attend the ST Supervisor/Trainer Webinar right after Advanced Certification and then become certified as a ST Supervisor and Trainer.

Now the rules have changed so that all Advanced Schema Therapists who started training on January of 2014 or later must fulfill the following requirements before applying for Schema Therapy Supervisor/Trainer Certification.

    1. Three years of clinical work after receiving Certification in Advanced Schema Therapy.
    2. During this 3-year period, at least 10 patients are treated with Schema Therapy for a duration of at least 6 months (reporting of this based on the honor system).
    3. Of these 10 patients, 4 must have a diagnosis of some form of personality disorder (also based on the honor system).
    4. After this 3-year period, Advanced Schema Therapists must participate in a 12-hour Supervisor Skills Development Workshop Webinar.  Currently, this workshop is set up as 4 separate 3-hour online workshops provided over the course of 4 months.

After all requirements are completed, an Advanced Schema Therapist can apply for Certification as a ST Supervisor/Trainer.

These 4 workshops will be provided in 3-hour installments beginning in September 2019 and completing in December 2019.

Stay tuned for the dates of these very important workshops!

Warm Regards, Jeff Conway, ISST Training Coordinator (jconwayny@gmail.com)

How do you integrate schemas and modes to achieve lasting results?

    ANNOUNCING OUR FEATURED SPEAKER

We are thrilled to announce that the FeaturedPresentation at ENLIGHT 2019 in Edinburgh will be presented by the creator and founder of Schema Therapy: Jeff Young.

Taking place near the end of an active Day 1 full of learning and connecting with fellow colleagues from around the world, the FeaturedPresentation will be a highlight of ENLIGHT 2019.

Jeff will discuss the challenges many therapists face when struggling to balance between a focus in treatment on schemas relative to modes. The end result of a sometimes fragmented approach between the two concepts can lead to incomplete treatment outcomes that may not fully realize both emotional and behavioral change in patients.

When a therapist solely focuses on schemas to treat a patient, she or he may underutilize the effectiveness of mode work to break life patterns and to create behavioral changes. Similarly, a therapist who practices a singular focus on mode work may limit the full impact targeting schemas can have to help a patient create deep emotional changes.

Jeff will clarify on a conceptual level how schemas and modes can work together simultaneously to create both emotional and behavioral change. Originally, the shema and mode concepts were not developed to be separate approaches to treatment, but rather to be addressed at the same time. He will demonstrate how to change schemas at a deep level within the context of working with modes.

Additionally, some schemas are not addressed in mode work, so an effective schema therapist may best meet the needs of a patient’s schemas by flexibly stepping out of mode work when appropriate to target specific schemas. Effective Schema Therapy also encourages a therapist to tailor his or her treatment approach to focus intensely on an individual’s schemas when the need arises.

The skilled schema therapist is also adept at shifting from a schema focus to a mode focus, flexibly, depending on the particular needs and life situation of a patient. One example would be when a therapist is working with a patient experiencing Borderline Personality Disorder who may need to have his or her schemas addressed in the beginning stages of treatment, followed by a shift to target modes as the therapy continues.

Jeff will explain how to determine when to focus more on schemas or modes, or to use both concepts simulataneously depending on the stage of therapy and the life situations the patient is facing.

Ultimately, an effective schema therapist can flexibly use the interplay between schemas and modes to help patients create both deep rooted emotional shifts and change chronic behavioral patterns to achieve optimal and lasting results.
