Dealing with Angry Patients: Tips & Tricks for Therapists

One of the most difficult things for therapists to address in the therapy process is how to work with angry patients. Examples that can come up in the therapy office may include:

  • The client resists doing exercises in-session, and agitation intensifies as therapy continues
  • The client suddenly bursts out into rage for no apparent reason, ranting off a list of perceived injustices
  • The client becomes threatening or angry in a degrading way when he or she feels disrespected

Therapists can react to such examples of anger in very different ways. Some therapists may find anger so difficult that they try to preempt any dissatisfaction, irritation or anger in the client, clamping down during the session.

However, when a client is angry, he or she can also provoke feelings of failure in the therapist, causing the therapist to feel anxious and insecure. The therapist could even criticize him or herself for allowing the client to become angry.

When anger is not addressed effectively, the therapeutic process can stagnate, leading to feelings of despondency and exhaustion in the therapist, and a premature exit from the client.

In this webinar, participants will first learn to distinguish between the various forms of anger. Next, participants will learn how to address the different forms of anger effectively using tips & tricks from specific Schema Therapy methods and techniques.
